With as many as 13.5 million Americans being on hand-held phones at any give time during the day, the chance of some of them being in the process of driving a car is all too high. Even if a person feels they can use a cell phone and still be a safe driver, what about the person in another car who will be too distracted by using a cell phone to drive safely. More and more car and truck accidents involve distracted drivers. That distraction is all too often a hand-held phone and texting. The National Transportation Safety Board feels the problem is so serious that they recommend bans on all non-emergency calls and texting by operators of all types of vehicles on the nation’s roads.
For those who don’t think that distracted driving using hand-held phones is a problem, at least 3,092 roadway fatalities in the United States last year involved distracted drivers. Distracted driving is becoming almost as serious as the DUI problem. A real nightmare situation would be for an impaired driver to also be texting on a cell phone. The National Transportation Safety Board actually compares using a cell phone while driving to driving drunk. This is a serious problem in Colorado and this state is considering legislation to ban the use of cell phones while driving.
Should Colorado ban the use of cell phones while driving?
The number of texting and driving accidents is going up every year with an ever increasing number of fatalities. The number of texting and driving accidents in Colorado is also going up. Drivers must be protected from unnecessary car accidents whenever possible. A growing number of states and municipalities are banning the use of cell phones while driving to one extent or another. If passing a law outlawing cell phone use by drivers will save lives of innocent people, isn’t it a good idea? It is hard to enforce such laws when cell phone use is so widespread, but the nation has managed to pass laws to have people wear seat belts and use safe infant and child seats for children’s safety. Those laws have been accepted and obeyed by most drivers.
When the people of Colorado consider the question “Should Colorado ban the use of cell phones while driving?”, the answer is probably yes. Even though refraining from using cell phones while driving may be a little inconvenient, it could save thousands of lives every year.
